1. What is ISO 3166?

The ISO 3166 is a member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and refers to a standardized system for encoding geographical units. Appropriate standards are comprised of three parts for encoding:

  • certain countries and dependent territories (ISO 3166-1)
  • country subunits (ISO 3166-2)
  • former countries (ISO 3166-3)
